BREAKING NEWS: INTERPRETER KILLS 2 U.S. SOLDIERS IN AFGHANISTAN
The mainstream media in the United States continues to ignore what should be on the front pages and the lead story on every TV news outlet----the war in Afghanistan.

KABUL - A NATO official says an Afghan interpreter killed two U.S. service members before he was killed himself at a combat outpost in eastern Afghanistan.

The new details emerged Saturday, a day after the deaths were announced in a brief statement.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information, says the attack occurred in Wardak province.
First reports indicated three Americans were killed but the official said one of the dead was an Afghan.
It wasn't immediately clear why the interpreter opened fire.
A clash between U.S. and Afghan troops Saturday that left four Afghan soldiers dead also occurred in Wardak province. But the official says the incidents don't appear to be related.

KABUL (AP) -- NATO forces clashed with Afghan troops Saturday at a snow-covered highway outpost, calling in an airstrike that killed four Afghan soldiers, U.S. and Afghan officials said.
Afghanistan's Defense Ministry condemned the incident and demanded punishment for those responsible. NATO called it a "regrettable incident and announced an investigation.
The deaths are likely to strain relations between NATO and Afghan forces at a time both are calling for a closer partnership in the fight against the Taliban.
The fighting began about 3 a.m. in the eastern Wardak province, when a joint NATO-Afghan force traded fire with another Afghan unit manning the outpost. NATO troops then called in an airstrike, killing the four Afghans, NATO and the Afghan ministry said.
Neither group confirmed the nationality of the NATO soldiers. Associated Press Television News footage of the aftermath showed American armored vehicles on the highway, about a half mile (a kilometer) from the hilltop outpost. The snow outside the fortified compound was blackened by the airstrike.
"Besides expressing heartfelt condolences to the families of the martyrs, the Afghan Defense Ministry is condemning this incident," the Afghan statement said, adding a delegation had been sent to the area to investigate. "After the investigation is completed, the Defense Ministry wants to bring those responsible to justice."
Provincial officials said the fighting was due to a misunderstanding as the joint NATO-Afghan force returned from an operation in the Sayed Abad district. Provincial spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said seven Afghan soldiers also had been wounded.
NATO said the Afghans began shooting first and the joint force returned fire before calling in the airstrike.
"We work extremely hard to coordinate and synchronize our operations," NATO spokesman Brig Gen. Eric Tremblay said.
It was believed to be the first fatal friendly fire incident since November, when eight Afghans -- four soldiers, three policemen and an interpreter -- were killed during close combat amid a search for a missing U.S. paratrooper.
Afghanistan's Defense Ministry said at the time that the deaths had been caused by "an air attack by NATO forces" during the fighting.
Saturday's incident followed the deaths Friday of two U.S. service members and one U.S. employee who were killed in eastern Afghanistan. In a statement announcing the deaths, NATO did not specify the circumstances or give further details pending an investigation.
That suggested the deaths may not have been due to hostile fire.
Also Saturday, NATO said its troops opened fire on a taxi the day before as it sped toward a patrol, ignoring warning shots. Two civilians were killed and one was wounded in the shooting, which occurred in the Muqor district of Ghazni province.
U.S. soldiers shot and killed an Afghan imam Thursday when his car approached a convoy on the eastern outskirts of Kabul.
Elsewhere, joint NATO-Afghan forces came under attack in the northwestern province of Badghis at about 1 a.m. Saturday (2030 GMT Friday; 3:30 p.m. EDT Friday), prompting a gunbattle and an airstrike that killed eight militants, including a group leader, deputy provincial police chief Abdul Jabar Khan said.

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Two civilians were wounded in an armed attack by unidentified gunmen targeting pilgrims going on foot to the holy Shiite city of Karbala to visit Imam al-Hussein Shrine, the second in southern Baghdad Saturday, an Iraqi police source said.
“The gunmen opened small arms fire at pilgrims in the area of al-Mahdiya, al-Dora neighborhood, southern Baghdad, wounding two,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Meanwhile, an Iraqi police source told Aswat al-Iraq that a home-made bomb planted by unidentified persons on the main road in al-Sayyediya went off while pilgrims were heading on foot to Karbala to visit Imam al-Hussein shrine on the occasion of the arbaeen, killing one person and wounding four others.
“The security forces sealed off the explosion site and rushed the wounded to the nearby al-Yarmuk hospital for treatment,” the source added.
The arbaeen pilgrimage is a religious occasion marking the 40th day after the death of Imam al-Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson and the third holiest figure for Shiite Muslims, in the battle of Taf in Karbala in the Hijri year 61 (680 in the Gregorian calendar).
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from inside and outside Iraq were flowing on foot into the city for the holy rituals. Tight security measures have been in force and a large number of security personnel have been deployed in Iraq’s holy sites in preparation for the occasion.
Karbala, said to be housing the tombs of Imam al-Hussein and his brother Imam al-Abbas, lies 130 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Top Defense Contractors Spent $27 Million Lobbying At Time Of Afghan Surge Announcement

The ten largest defense contractors in the nation spent more than $27 million lobbying the federal government in the last quarter of 2009, according to a review of recently-filed lobbying records.
The massive amount of money used to influence the legislative process came as the White House announced it would ramp up military activity in Afghanistan and Congress considered appropriations bills to pay for that buildup. All told, these ten companies, the largest revenue earners in the industry, spent roughly $7.2 million more lobbying in the fourth quarter of 2009 (October through December) than in the three months prior.
Such an increase in lobbying expenditures is partly a reflection of just how profitable the business of waging war can be. Each of these companies earned billions of dollars in defense contracts this past year. As the U.S. ramps up its military activities overseas, and the army is stretched thin by other ventures, it stands to reason that the contracts won't dry up any time soon.
In mid-December, Congress passed a defense appropriations bill that totaled more than $635 billion. Shortly thereafter, the firm Northrop Grumman moved its corporate office to the Washington D.C. region to be closer to the heart of legislative action. Among the issues on which these ten firms lobbied, "appropriations" was the most frequently cited in lobbying forms.
"We've built Rome," one longtime good-government official said of the symbiosis between contractors and the government.
On a related note, the Congressional Research Service released a report on Thursday, which showed that the number of private security contractors has bulged in the wake of Obama's Afghanistan-surge announcement. Currently, contractors in Afghanistan make up between 22 percent and 30 percent of armed U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
SHOCKING NEWS: SOLDIERS ARE BEING FORCED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THEIR CHILDREN AND THE MILITARY, AND THEY'RE PAYING THE PRICE IN JAILTIME
In January, U.S. Army officials announced four separate court-martial charges against Specialist Alexis Hutchinson, a single mother who missed her deployment to Afghanistan in early November 2009 when her childcare plans for her infant son, Kamani, fell through at the last minute. Hutchinson was jailed and threatened with a court-martial if she did not agree to deploy to Afghanistan. Kamani was placed into a county foster care system.

Hutchinson, in accordance with the family care plan of the U.S. Army, had been allowed to fly to Oakland, California to leave her son with her mother, Angelique Hughes. However, after a week, Hughes realized she couldn't care for Kamani along with her other duties of caring for a daughter with special needs, her ailing mother, and an ailing sister. She told Hutchinson and her commander, Captain Gassant and the Army granted a Hutchinson an extension so that she could find someone else to care for Kamani.
In the meantime, the boy came back to Georgia to be with his mother.But only a few days before Hutchinson's original deployment date, she was told by the Army she would not get the time extension after all, and would have to deploy despite the fact that her son had nowhere to go.
Faced with this choice, Specialist Hutchinson chose not to show up for her plane to Afghanistan. The military arrested her and placed her child in the county foster care system."I think they didn't believe her that she was unable to find someone to care for her infant," Hutchinson's civilian lawyer, Rai Sue Sussman, said at the time.

THREE BLASTS ROCK BAGHDAD CLOSE TO HOTELS HOUSING U.S. JOURNALISTS

The blasts went off near the fortified Green Zone where government buildings are located [Reuters]
At least 36 people have been killed in three suicide car bombings, which took place within 10 minutes of each other, near hotels in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, police said.
At least 71 other people were wounded in the blasts, which came during rush hour on Monday.
The blasts happened close to the Sheraton and Palestine Hotels in the centre of the city, and the Babil hotel in the south.The hotels are located outside the heavily fortified Green Zone, where many government and international agencies are situated.

VETERANS: BANISHED AND BETRAYED

"Banished veterans." The phrase shouldn't make sense. Someone joins the military, fights in a war, returns home, and then is banished? Thankfully, this can't happen here...
But it is happening here. Thousands of men and women who have risked their lives in the country's wars have been deported or are living under the threat of deportation because they committed non-violent crimes that often wouldn't warrant serving jail time. Many of these vets suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a condition often overlooked by our nation's health care system.
These vets can be deported because they are not U.S. citizens. Gabriel Delgadillo, a Vietnam veteran, committed a burglary in 1988. Eight years later, burglary was declared a deportable offense. Only then, in a retroactive application of the new law, was he deported, leaving behind a wife and seven children. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) officially deplored Delgadillo's deportation in May, 1999, stating:
These harsh new measures have now snared immigrants who spilled their blood for our country. As the INS prepares to deport these American veterans, we have not even been kind enough to thank them for their service with a hearing to listen to their story and consider whether, just possibly, their military service or other life circumstances outweigh the government's interest in deporting them.
Robyn Sword, an activist on behalf of banished vets whose fiance, Rohan Coombs, is facing deportation for drug offenses, pointed out in an interview that many people simply can't get past the image of a "convicted felon." Who wants them here, right? That might be understandable in cases of violent crime but such an attitude is inexcusable when applied to most banished veterans.
