If you were to get ALL your news from FOX NEWS, you would believe IRAQ is a tranquil country after "the surge." On Tuesday dozens were killed in a Baghdad restaurant when a suicide bomber blew themselves up. There is something else that is troubling to this blogger about the success of "the surge." How come we NEVER read or heard about any insurgent or Al Queda casualties? The reason should be clear to anyone even if they haven't been in the military. There were no insurgent casualties because there were no BATTLES or FIREFIGHTS.
The Sunni Awakening had run the insurgents and Al Queda out of the various provinces and the U.S. military moved in after all had calmed down, but former President Bush and his propaganda branch FOX NEWS continued to say we "WON" the Iraq War. Bill O'Reilly said the same thing on Tuesday night on the David Letterman Show. O'Reilly said we WON the Iraq War. So if the IRAQ WAR has been won, then why did this happen on Tuesday:

Iraqi officials said six Iraqis were wounded in the attack.
#2: A mortar round wounded two people in eastern Baghdad, police said.
Kirkuk:#1: One civilian on Tuesday was slaughtered by unknown gunmen in Kirkuk city, according to a local security source. “Today, unknown gunmen slaughtered Sabah Aziz Sulayman, a retiree, inside his house in al-Wassiti neighborhood, southwestern Kirkuk, before they fled to an unknown destination,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The body of Sulayman, a Christian, was taken to the morgue in Kirkuk,” the source added.
Mosul:#1: Iraqi police say a suicide truck bomber killed at least seven people and wounded 17 in the northern city of Mosul. A police officer in Mosul says the attacker was targeting a police station in the city's center.Police Maj. Jassim al-Jubouri says those killed include four policemen and three civilians.
#2: Attackers wounded three civilians when they hurled a hand-grenade at a U.S. military patrol in central Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
#1Al Anbar Prv:Fallujah: An explosive charge placed inside a car belonging to a police officer from Falluja city went off in al-Shurta neighborhood, eastern Falluja, wounding three personnel,” Maj. Hamid Ahmed told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

(CNN) -- Erik Roberts, an Army sergeant who was wounded in Iraq, underwent his 13th surgery recently to save his right leg from amputation. Imagine his shock when he got a bill for $3,000 for his treatment.
"I just thought it was bull---- that I'm getting billed for being wounded in Iraq doing my job. I always put the mission first, and now that I was wounded in Iraq, they're sending me bills," he said.
"I put my life on the line and I was wounded in combat, and I came back and they're not going to take care of my medical bills?"
It's a level of outrage shared by his mother, as well as the doctor who performed the surgery.
"It's hard to understand why we're not taking care of guys like Erik whose injuries are clearly related to their service. They deserve the best care of anybody," said Dr. William Obremskey, an Air Force veteran and surgeon at Vanderbilt Orthopaedics in Nashville, Tennessee."For him to be responsible for $3,000, I think, is a little ridiculous or is uncalled for, particularly in this situation."
His mother, Robin Roberts, put it more succinctly: "Why should any soldier pay one penny of a medical bill from injuries that occurred while they were fighting in a war? That's what really frustrates me."
The Department of Veterans Affairs has now decided to pay his bill, but only after prodding from a U.S. senator who got involved after CNN brought it to his attention.
Roberts, of Warren, Ohio, is one of more than 31,100 U.S. troops to have been wounded in Iraq. An additional 4,262 have died in the war.
Roberts was wounded April 25, 2006, when roadside bombs tore through his Humvee in western Baghdad. Heat from the flames ignited the Humvee's ammunition, which popped off all around. See Roberts describe getting blown up »
Roberts and his buddies, A.J. Jefferson and Luke Murphy, were badly wounded and bleeding on the ground after jumping from the burning vehicle. They were saved by comrades who rushed to help them.
"The truck automatically filled with smoke. There was fire coming from the middle of the truck. And I just feel my whole right side just like kind of explode," Roberts said. "I thought at that moment that my life was over, so I started praying."
All three soldiers survived the attack, but Murphy lost his leg. Days later, on his 23rd birthday, Roberts returned to the States. He underwent a series of life-saving surgeries, including 12 different ones to repair his fractured right leg. A metal rod was inserted in his upper leg to help the fracture heal.

OBAMA UNVEILS PLANS FOR AFGHANISTAN WAR--NEW YORK TIMES
The long anticipated plans for the war in Afghanistan will be unveiled by the Obama administration on Friday. Below is the first report from the New York Times on what President Obama's plans are for Afghanistan.
Obama to Set Benchmarks in Fight Against Militants

WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to further bolster American forces in Afghanistan and for the first time set benchmarks for progress in fighting Al Qaeda and the Taliban there and in Pakistan, officials said Thursday.
In imposing conditions on the Afghans and Pakistanis, Mr. Obama is replicating a strategy used in Iraq two years ago both to justify a deeper American commitment and prod governments in the region to take more responsibility for quelling the insurgency and building lasting political institutions.
“The era of the blank check is over,” Mr. Obama told Congressional leaders at the White House, according to an account of the meeting provided on the condition of anonymity because it was a private session.
The new strategy, which Mr. Obama will formally announce Friday, will send 4,000 more troops to train Afghan security forces on top of the 17,000 extra combat troops that he already ordered to Afghanistan shortly after taking office, administration and Congressional officials said. But for now, Mr. Obama has decided not to send additional combat forces, they said, although military commanders at one point had requested a total of 30,000 more American troops.
Although the administration is still developing the specific benchmarks for Afghanistan and Pakistan, officials said they would be the most explicit demands ever presented to the governments in Kabul and Islamabad. In effect, Mr. Obama would be insisting that two fractured countries plagued by ancient tribal rivalries and modern geopolitical hostility find ways to work together and transform their societies.
American officials have repeatedly said that Afghanistan has to make more progress in fighting corruption, curbing the drug trade and sharing power with the regions, while they have insisted that Pakistan do more to cut ties between parts of its government and the Taliban. Mr. Obama telephoned President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan and President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan on Thursday to share the main elements of the strategic review.

By tracking the amount of light emitted by Baghdad neighborhoods at night, a team of UCLA geographers has uncovered fresh evidence that last year's U.S. troop surge in Iraq may not have been as effective at improving security as some U.S. officials have maintained.
Night light in neighborhoods populated primarily by embattled Sunni residents declined dramatically just before the February 2007 surge and never returned, suggesting that ethnic cleansing by rival Shiites may have been largely responsible for the decrease in violence for which the U.S. military has claimed credit, the team reports in a new study based on publicly available satellite imagery.
"Essentially, our interpretation is that violence has declined in Baghdad because of intercommunal violence that reached a climax as the surge was beginning," said lead author John Agnew, a UCLA professor of geography and authority on ethnic conflict. "By the launch of the surge, many of the targets of conflict had either been killed or fled the country, and they turned off the lights when they left."
The team reports its findings in the October issue of "Environment and Planning A," a leading peer-reviewed academic journal that specializes in urban and environmental planning issues.
The night-light signature in four other large Iraqi cities — Kirkuk, Mosul, Tikrit and Karbala — held steady or increased between the spring of 2006 and the winter of 2007, the UCLA team found. None of these cities were targets of the surge.
Baghdad's decreases were centered in the southwestern Sunni strongholds of East Rashid and West Rashid, where the light signature dropped 57 percent and 80 percent, respectively, during the same period.

U.S. AIR STRIKE ON AFGHAN CIVILIANS FUELS ANGER (RAW VIDEO)
An attack by U.S. planes on an Afghanistan town has fueled hatred of Americans by Afghan citizens who vow to strap bombs to their bodies to kill American troops. The U.S. says the attacks were aimed at Taliban strongholds, but the civilians in this video talk about all their children and relatives who were killed in the U.S. attack.

President Obama recently sent 17,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, but the Taliban fighters claim they will defeat the Americans just like they did the British and the Russians when they tried to invade and occupy Afghanistan.

(CNN) -- Five Afghan civilians and one police officer died Saturday in a car bomb attack targeting a police checkpoint in the country's northeastern region, the NATO command reported.
The incident occurred at a temporary Afghan National Police checkpoint near Jalalabad City in Nangarhar province, according to NATO's International Security Assistance Force.
ISAF said the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan told ISAF units that the five civilians and an Afghan National Police member were killed, and five civilians were injured.
ISAF also reported the death of one of its soldiers Friday in southern Afghanistan.
Also on Friday, four Canadian soldiers were killed and eight more wounded in separate bomb attacks west of Kandahar, one of the Afghan conflict's southern hotspots.
The first of the two attacks took place when a roadside bomb struck a foot patrol west of Kandahar about 6:45 a.m. Friday (2:15 a.m. GMT), said Capt. Isabelle Riche, a ministry spokeswoman in Ottawa. Two soldiers were killed and five wounded in that blast, she said.
The second took place about two hours later, when two more soldiers died and three others were wounded when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in the Shah-e-kot valley in Afghanistan's southeast, Riche said.
Canada has more than 2,800 troops in Afghanistan, where a U.S.-led coalition has been fighting since the 2001 al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington. Friday's attacks bring the country's death toll in the seven-year-old war to 116.

The Obama administration recently approved an additional $70 million dollars to Blackwater, the private U.S. security firm, who had been training Afghans to fight the Taliban, but now the Blackwater trained Afghans have switched sides and have joined the Taliban to rid Afghanistan of United States troops and all NATO troops.

BAGHDAD — Iraqis are in many ways taking to heart the adage that all politics is local, as Americans hand over to them ever greater control of affairs in the provinces. That local control, however, has brought more horror stories than successes in the past few days.
In Anbar Province, six former Camp Bucca detainees were on their way home on Friday when local police officers abducted and killed them in revenge for their days as insurgents, according to relatives of the victims.
In Wasit Province, a hard-line new police chief appointed by the prime minister has been transferring corrupt policemen out of the area, but local political opponents say that is the reason the local murder rate seems to have doubled.
And in a remote part of northern Diyala Province, Iraqi soldiers surrounded a refugee camp for Iranian dissidents, Camp Ashraf, blockading food and water to the roughly 3,500 residents there. A spokesman for the dissidents’ group, the People’s Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, said Sunday that only the presence of Americans had prevented an attack on them.

4 U.S. Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Four American soldiers were killed in eastern Afghanistan in a roadside explosion on Sunday, the United States military said, in the worst of several attacks by insurgents around the country.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, a spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, said.
The Taliban have been threatening to increase attacks on foreign and Afghan forces in Afghanistan to counter the increase in American troops arriving in the country over the coming months.
Military officials have been predicting an increase in violence this year.
In a separate attack on Sunday, a suicide bomber blew himself up on a main road south of Kabul, killing two Afghan civilians and wounding nine others. The bomber was standing outside a high school and may have been planning to attack members of an Afghan intelligence security force that passed by just minutes later, said Gen. Sayed Abdul Ghafar, the head of police criminal investigations in Kabul.
The wounded were shopkeepers working in nearby stores and people in passing cars, bystanders said. “It was 12 o’clock, I was washing my hands to get ready for lunch and suddenly I heard a loud explosion followed by smoke and dust,” said a 21-year-old shopkeeper, Hejratullah. “When the smoke cleared, I saw my father, my brother and my uncle were lying on the ground and blood was pouring from their bodies.”
