Images of rape and torture are among photographs of abuse at Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq that Barack Obama is blocking from release, a former general claimed today.

One photo reportedly shows an American soldier raping a female prisoner and another was said to show a translator raping a male detainee.

Others are said to depict sexual assaults with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.

Retired major-general Antonio Taguba, who oversaw the investigation into abuses at the prison in Baghdad, said he agreed with the president's decision not to release the pictures.
“I am not sure what purpose their release would serve other than a legal one and the consequence would be to imperil our troops, the only protectors of our foreign policy, when we most need them,” he said. “The mere description of these pictures is horrendous enough, take my word for it.”

The prisoner abuse scandal at Abu Ghraib exploded after photos taken by soldiers appeared in 2004. The latest images were included in Maj-Gen Taguba's report that year into prisoner abuse at the jail.

The Daily Telegraph, which spoke to Maj-Gen Taguba, said it was not clear from the report who had seen the photos or how they were obtained. It said the photos related to 400 cases of alleged abuse between 2001 and 2005 at Abu Ghraib and six other prisons.

The newspaper said the images were backed up by statements from Maj-Gen Taguba's report obtained under America's freedom of information act.

Last month a report by the Senate armed services committee said government backing for the CIA's harsh interrogation methods set the tone for abuses in Iraq and that it was not appropriate simply to blame low-ranking officers, saying high-ranking officials sent the message that such acts were appropriate.

The report followed the release of memos from president George Bush's administration that justified the use on terrorist suspects of what critics said amounted to torture. Obama administration officials did not respond to requests for comment.

The helicopters landed in blackness before the moon rose. The infantry company rushed out and through waist-high vegetation and into forests on More..an Afghan ridge.Over the next 40 hours, more than 100 soldiers from the First Battalion, 26th Infantry, swept Sautalu Sar, the mountain where members of the Navy Seals were surrounded in battle in 2005. They were looking for weapons caches and insurgents.

They labored uphill through snow until daybreak, when the company broke into smaller patrols above 9,200 feet. They descended the next night through gullies and shin-deep mud and staggered back to their outpost without having yet slept.All the while, the insurgents watched.

Why fight the Americans when the Americans were ready and strong?Afghanistan is to be President Obama’s war, and the Pentagon is retooling its efforts here in ways it hopes will undermine a sprawling insurgency.

But as soldiers on the ground await reinforcements, this American operation showed that an old axiom of guerrilla warfare still applied: Where conventional soldiers mass, insurgents usually disperse.Even the means were familiar. In the Korangal Valley, the insurgents have spotters on ridges. When the Americans send out a patrol, or launch a helicopter assault, spotters relay word up and down the valley. Then they decide what, if anything, to do.What is the way through? The United States once talked of winning here. Now it speaks, more carefully, of succeeding. How success will be defined remains any soldier’s guess.Will it be enough to ensure Afghanistan is not a launching pad for attacks against the United States and its allies — in other words, to ensure it is not a national security threat?Or will success be declared when Afghanistan aligns with the more ambitious vision projected by the Bush administration? In that plan, Afghanistan, one of the most traditional lands on earth, becomes a nation remade along at least faintly Western lines.

Since 2001, the U.S. has committed nearly $33 billion for reconstruction projects in Afghanistan. Yet as President Barack Obama sends more troops and aid to quell a growing insurgency, there's been no detailed public accounting of where the money has gone and how effectively it's being spent.

As in Iraq, where the U.S. has contributed $50 billion for rebuilding, the flow of money to Afghanistan outpaces the ability to track it. The situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate. There have been numerous suicide bombings in the past two weeks claiming the lives of over 150 Iraqi civilians. On Saturday, two Americans were killed in separate incidents inside the highly fortified Green Zone.

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Two Americans have been killed in separate incidents inside Baghdad's fortified Green Zone, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Saturday, raising concerns about its security as Iraq's forces assume more control over the sprawling district.

The body of an American contractor was found Friday in a vehicle in the Green Zone, and another contractor was killed by a rocket attack that night near the American Embassy, a U.S. military official said.

The two deaths come as the Iraqi government has begun tearing down the protective blast walls surrounding the Green Zone, which houses a number of government ministries as well as the American Embassy.

Iraq assumed control of the zone under a U.S.-Iraqi security pact that took effect Jan. 1. The U.S. continues to provide its own security in key areas, such as near the embassy and at the small military base inside.

3 U.S. SOLDIERS KILLED IN BAGHDAD BOMBING

BAGHDAD – Three American soldiers were killed Thursday in a bombing in Baghdad, the U.S. military said, part of a burst of violence only weeks before American combat troops are due to leave Iraqi cities.

The attack was one of a series of bombings to hit Baghdad and the northern city of Kirkuk, killing at least 66 people and wounding dozens more in two days.

The deadliest blast Thursday occurred in Baghdad's southern Dora district, where a bomb exploded near an American foot patrol, U.S. and Iraqi officials said.

The U.S. military initially reported nine U.S. personnel were wounded in the attack. Later, the military said it could not confirm that number because the injured were still being evaluated and treated.

The attack occurred about 10:38 a.m. as the soldiers patrolled near an outdoor market, said Army Maj. David Shoupe.

Iraqi police said a suicide bomber was responsible, but Shoupe said the U.S. could not confirm that. He said four civilians died in the blast, but Iraqi police and hospital officials put the civilian toll at 12 killed and 25 wounded.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Earlier Thursday, another suicide bomber killed seven U.S.-backed Sunni paramilitaries as they waited in a line to receive salaries at an Iraqi military base in the northern city of Kirkuk.

BAGHDAD, May 20 -- A car bomb exploded Wednesday near a crowded ice cream parlor in a Shiite neighborhood of northern Baghdad, killing at least 34 people and wounding 72 in one of the deadliest attacks in weeks.

Iraqi security forces cordoned off the bombing site as ambulances, their sirens wailing, ferried the dead and wounded to nearby hospitals. Witnesses said people ran frantically from the scene, terrified that another bombing might follow.

"These are desperate attempts to divide the Iraqi people," said Hamdallah Ali Rikabi, a neighborhood official in a movement loyal to Moqtada al-Sadr, a Shiite cleric whose followers once controlled the area. "But they have learned from their past."

A series of suicide bombings struck predominantly Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad last month, making April the most violent month this year and fueling speculation that Sunni insurgents might be trying to instigate the sort of sectarian conflict that plunged Iraq into chaos in 2006 and 2007.

Civilian casualties have mounted each month this year, as the United States prepares to withdraw combat troops from cities by June 30.

But for days this month, amid a lull in the bombings, Baghdad's most formidable problems had seemed to be traffic sometimes snarled for a mile before omnipresent checkpoints and the heat of an early summer.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Two men described as dedicated to helping their patients deal with psychological problems and a soldier from Maryland were among five people shot to death at military counseling clinic in Baghdad, officials and family said Tuesday.

Navy Cmdr. Charles Springle, 52, of Wilmington, N.C., Pfc. Michael Edward Yates Jr., 19, of Federalsburg, Md., and Dr. Matthew Houseal, of Amarillo, Texas, have been identified as three of the victims in Monday's shooting. The names of the two others have not been released.

Yates' mother, Shawna Machlinski, said two Army representatives came to her home on the Eastern Shore and said her son was killed by what they called "friendly fire." Machlinski, who last spoke to her son on Mother's Day, said he had talked about the alleged shooter, 44-year-old Sgt. John M. Russell.

She said he told her Russell was deeply angry at the military after three tours of duty in Iraq.
"He said, 'Man, this guy's got issues,' " said Machlinski. She said her son wasn't more specific about Russell's problems and that he told her he got along with him.

The case, the deadliest of the war involving soldier-on-soldier violence, has cast a spotlight on combat stress and emotional problems resulting from frequent deployments to battle zones in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Shouting "Death to America" and "Death to the Government", thousands of Afghan villagers hurled stones at police yesterday as they vented their fury at American air strikes that local officials claim killed 147 civilians.

The riot started when people from three villages struck by US bombers in the early hours of Tuesday, brought 15 newly-discovered bodies in a truck to the house of the provincial governor. As the crowd pressed forward in Farah, police opened fire, wounding four protesters.

Traders in the rest of Farah city, the capital of the province of the same name where the bombing took place, closed their shops, vowing they would not reopen them until there is an investigation.

A local official Abdul Basir Khan said yesterday that he had collected the names of 147 people who had died, making it the worst such incident since the US intervened in Afghanistan started in 2001.

A phone call from the governor of Farah province, Rohul Amin, in which he said that 130 people had died, was played over the loudspeaker in the Afghan parliament in Kabul, sparking demands for more control over US operations.

U.S. SOLDIERS ARE AMBUSHED BY TALIBAN IN THE GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES---AFGHANISTAN (VIOLENT COMBAT VIDEO)

The mainstream media in the United States continues to downplay the war in Afghanistan---even sometimes as going so far as to call the Taliban a gaggle of ragtag fighters---however this video shows our troops are in the fight of their life in Afghanistan which has been called "the graveyard of empires." The U.S. Army troops shown in this violent combat video won't be spending time with their mothers on Mother's Day, but instead will be trying to keep their asses from being blown off by a relentless Taliban which are showing signs of getting stronger in Afghanistan. We wish just one news outlet could devote one minute showing a video like this to the American public, but that is asking too much as the media pulls out all the stops to dig up any trite story to report just so they won't have to report on the war in Afghanistan.
Why is this?
The answer is simple. Very few people in the mainstream media in the United States have ever worn the uniform of any branch of the United States military and so they couldn't care less what is happening to our troops in Afghanistan as well as Iraq.
We, however, will continue to bring to our blog viewers, who now number over 157,000 since we started blogging on the wars a little over a year ago, what the 200,000 young men and women serving in Afghanistan and Iraq go through on a daily basis.
It boils down to this. If you have someone in the military, you care about the war, but if you haven't got a member of your family or a close friend in the military then the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are a distraction from the daily TV fare of car chases and the latest on creeps like Drew Peterson.
There is one way to correct all this.
Re-instate the DRAFT and suddenly you will see people interested in what is happening in Afghanistan and Iraq.

MOSUL, Iraq — American soldiers opened fire and killed a 12-year old boy after a grenade hit their convoy in Mosul on Thursday.

The boy was found with ten thousand Iraqi dinars in his hand - worth less than $9. U.S. officials said the money is evidence of a disturbing new trend.

"We have every reason to believe that insurgents are paying children to conduct these attacks or assist the attackers in some capacity, undoubtedly placing the children in harm's way," a U. S. military spokesman wrote in an email on Saturday.

But eyewitnesses said the boy, identified as Omar Musa Salih, was standing by the side of the road selling fruit juice - a common practice in Iraq -- and had nothing to do with the attack.

A friend, Ahmed Jassim, 15, said he was selling cans of Pepsi nearby when he heard the grenade explode. He dove behind a parked car, then heard the roar of machine gun fire. "When the shooting was over and the patrol went away, I stood and I saw Omar on the ground covered with blood," Jassim said.

Another witness, Ahmed IzAldeen, 56, said he saw the person who threw the grenade. It wasn't the boy, but a man in his twenties, he said. IzAldeen said he saw the man standing behind a truck holding the grenade as the American patrol approached.

Military officials said they're sure the boy was part of the assault on the convoy. "Coalition forces fired on two of three individuals positively identified as involved in the attack, killing one, who they later discovered was a 12-year-old boy," the email said.

After similar incidents, one of the usual claims made is that the civilian casualties are inevitable since villagers are “used as human shields by the Taliban” but this time, DOD is spinning at a whole new level, claiming that the Taliban rounded up civilians and killed them with grenades – then loaded the bodies into trucks to use are an anti-American photo op.

It has been estimated by the Red Cross that 130 Afghan civilians, mostly women and children, were slaughtered in the U.S. raids.

CNN quickly had Barbara Starr on air repeating the DOD version within hours of the Clinton apology.

Unfortunately for the DOD spinmeisters, the International Committee of the Red Cross has detailed information from the scene – and given the ICRC’s normal reticence and careful neutrality, their credibility certainly beats that of a source that once before attempted to pass off a report from Ollie North that no civilians were killed in a similar attack as a report from a legitimate embedded journalist.

As noted yesterday, the ICRC not only sent investigators after the fact but also had “contacted all sides to warn them that there were civilians and injured people in the area” in advance:

TOP U.S. COMMANDER IN IRAQ SAYS TROOPS MAY STAY LONGER IN MOSUL

WASHINGTON - The top U.S. general in Iraq hedged his bets Friday about whether U.S. combat troops will pull out of the tumultuous city of Mosul on schedule next month, a milestone in the handover of Iraq's security to its own troops.

Mosul is Iraq's third largest city and a stronghold for al-Qaida and other Sunni militant violence despite markedly improved safety in most of the rest of the country. It is a key test of the security contract signed by the United States and Iraq last year that would pull U.S. forces out of the country by 2011.

Gen. Raymond Odierno said U.S. and Iraqi forces are in the midst of a neighborhood-by-neighborhood sweep of Mosul ahead of a June 30 deadline to hand over security for the city to Iraqi forces.

A jury in the US state of Kentucky has found a former private soldier guilty of the rape of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the killing of her and her family.

Steven Green, 24, faces a possible death sentence for his crimes.

Green was discharged from the army because of an apparent personality disorder before his role in the affair came to light.

Four other soldiers are serving sentences of between five and 110 years for their roles in the 2006 attack.

Three had admitted holding down Abeer Qassim al-Janabi, raping her and then killing her, her parents and her younger sister at the family's home in Mahmudiya before torching the building.

Mr Green was discharged from the 101st Airborne Division before the case came to light.
He was the first ex-soldier to be charged under a US law that allows prosecution for crimes committed overseas.

His sentencing hearing will begin on Monday.

In August 2007, Private Jesse Spielman was convicted of conspiracy to rape and murder and sentenced to 110 years in prison for his role in the incident.

Three other soldiers pleaded guilty and received sentences between five and 100 years under plea agreements with prosecutors.

AFGHANISTAN WAR TO COST MORE THAN IRAQ WAR

The price tag for running the war in Afghanistan will outstrip the cost of the conflict in Iraq next year, according to budget documents released today by the Pentagon.

Afghanistan, in the words of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is now supposed to be the Pentagon’s “main effort” and “strategic focus.” This budget makes it official: The Department is requesting a $130 billion “overseas contingency operations” fund, of which the Afghanistan campaign will receive the largest share.

Vice Adm. Steve Stanley, the director of force structure, resources and assessment on the Joint Staff, told reporters that the budget request represents “where you’re going to first see the swing of not only dollars or resources, but combat capability” from Iraq to Afghanistan.

“The money requested here – about $65 billion for Afghanistan –actually exceeds the $61 billion that we’re requesting for Iraq,” he said. “So that’s the first time in our war costs request.”

Those numbers are based on keeping an average of around 100,000 troops in Iraq and 68,000 in Afghanistan. Troop levels are supposed to come down gradually in Iraq over the next year, and these numbers are based on plans to bring troop levels down to around 50,000 by the end of the fiscal year, according to Pentagon Comptroller Robert Hale. In addition to paying for a plus-up of troops, the Afghanistan portion of the operations budget will pay for new equipment, like the scaled-down version of the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected truck that will be customized for the primitive roads of Afghanistan.

Of course, none of these dollar figures are carved in granite. These are just budget promises, based on certain assumptions about how the wars will progress in the year to come. Afghanistan and Iraq have a habit of shredding such predictions. And then, there’s Congress’ habit of packing war spending bills with things that go oink…

The inclusion of the “contingency operations” money in the base Pentagon budget marks a departure with the budgeting practices of the Bush administration, which paid for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan largely through “emergency” supplemental appropriations.

That practice worried lawmakers and budget watchdogs, who argued that the practice limited oversight and encouraged profligate spending. We’ll be taking a closer look at this $664 billion budget, which is supposed to set the template for more disciplined spending within the Department of Defense.
