CNN REPORTS: IRAQ PARTY WANTS TO PUNISH US SOLDIER WHO USED QURAN FOR TARGET PRACTICE

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's most powerful Sunni Arab political party on Monday said a U.S. soldier's desecration of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, requires the "severest of punishments," not just an apology and a military reassignment.

The Iraqi Islamic Party, the movement of Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, condemned what it said was a "blatant assault on the sanctities of Muslims all over the world."
An American staff sergeant who was a sniper section leader used a Quran for target practice on May 9.

The U.S. commander in Baghdad on Saturday issued a formal apology and read a letter of apology from the shooter.

The sergeant has been relieved of duty as a section leader "with prejudice," officially reprimanded by his commanding general, dismissed from his regiment and redeployed -- reassigned to the United States.

I have a problem with apologizing for this soldiers actions. Yes it was not a good idea, but, what about the muslims burning and desecrating our flag, is that not a reprehensible act as well. The flag is sacret to us.

Ya know? I'm getting pretty darned tired of hearing about all the terrible things we Americans do in Iraq. Every time you turn around some sect person is insulted about something. They got an apology for what was done, which, by the way, I don't think is that big a deal. How come nothing is ever said about what they do? How come we dont demand apologies when they burn our flag, behead and mutilate American citizens and hang them from bridges and blow us up? They demand the 'severest of punishments'? What would they suggest? Shooting him in the head and throwing him in a mass grave? They seem to choose that as the murder of choice over there. I for one can't wait until the Americans are out of that dirt bowl and the Iraqis can go back to just killing each other.

You can bet your last dollar we have become so apologetic in the last few years we can't stand it. If you think for one minute the iraqi people would apologize for something like that you have another thing coming. They apologize with bullets and machetties. I would say the man was wrong on a moral basis and he alone should apologize but not the whole country. Let's just stop with the apologies, start kicking _ss and get the hell out of there as fast as we can.

I couldn't agree more. We never call for the Flag burners to be delivered to our courts. We never get a presidential appologie over the latest car bomb. If Bush was to appologize to anyone, it should be us. The American people that have to deal with this crap. What happend to our sanity?

You know we are so worried about offending them, why are we over there again. Oh yeah to protect them, screw that let them kill their own, bring our people back home. I know when I was in Desert Storm we were told over and over about how not to "offend" any of the arabs. Well I was offended just by being over there fighting for oil, what good did it do us? I could gaurentee you that if there was any qurans near us it would of been burnt like the rest of the trash we burnt. These men and women don't want to be in iraq, they rather be home protecting their own home not some ungrateful country. Amd the col. who kissed that book is a disgrace to the military and to all vets.

I agree with anonymous. When I saw Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond kiss the koran book, I wanted to throw up. What is with this? This infurates me to no end. Bring our soldiers home and leave the ones who kiss it..over there!

Isn't our country suppose to be known for God? Contradiction at its finest! Kiss the Quran, disregard the bible. Our country is weak. Apologizing for a minimal act. AND! We aren't even muslims. The Bush Administration is sucking up some more for some OIL!!!!!!!

We need to bring our people home. Let the arabs fight amoung themselves, they are good at that. People talk about National Security so what good is it doing us if most of our troops are in the middle east? What good is it doing our troops to hear that the quran (a bunch of paper) is more important then they are? What kind of an American is the guy who kissed that thing? It's time to cut the cord and let them go on their own. All you ever hear about is how our government is kissing the muslim's ass. They are not speaking for the American people and I tired of them saying they represent us when they don't even listen to anything we say.
