- I was a reporter and columnist for 40 years for a chain of newspapers in the suburbs of Chicago. I'm a military veteran having served in the United States Army Combat Engineers (Cpl. E-4) and a Korean War veteran with an Honorable Discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States of America

During my ROTC days - which was back during the height of Hair Metal in 1988 - my friends always mistake me for being in the military due to my "unfashionably" short crew-cut even though I'm just in the ROTC for the college scholarship and for the extra money to buy a decent guitar and amp. But since the 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom, most twenty-something American grunts being shown in the BBC and CNN sports tattoos that are quite indistinguishable form American Heavy Metal musicians with major record label contracts.
