I was a reporter and columnist for 40 years for a chain of newspapers in the suburbs of Chicago. I'm a military veteran having served in the United States Army Combat Engineers (Cpl. E-4) and a Korean War veteran with an Honorable Discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States of America
Either this soldier is very lucky or the insurgent doing the shooting - which I assume was using a Kalashnikov - is probably over a kilometer away for the Kevlar helmet to safely resist a direct hit by a modern assault rifle round.
Nancy: Thanks for your comment. I really have no idea of the distance, but I would venture to say it was because the insurgent was more than a kilometer away.
Wasn't the lack of body armor the primary cause of US soldier casualties serving in Afghanistan and also in Iraq back in 2003? It is also safe to say that Afghan insurgents are not known for using 9-mm parabellum sub-machineguns which Kevlar helmets are designed to resist such bullets. But I haven't heard stories yet of a modern Kevlar helmet safely resisting a 50 caliber Magnum Research Desert Eagle pistol round.

Thanks for the info anc comment Nadine. I don't know that much about modern-day ammo. I carried an M1 when I was in the Army.
