BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A mortar shells landed on Tuesday near the U.S. embassy inside the Green Zone, an eyewitness said.

“A mortar shell, launched from an unknown place, landed today near the U.S. embassy in the fortified Green Zone, with no word on casualties,” the witness told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
“Sirens kept wailing in the regions after the attack, while U.S. choppers hovered over the eastern regions of Baghdad,” he added.

GARDEZ, Afghanistan — Seven Taliban attackers, including a suicide bomber driving an ambulance, hit the center of Kabul on Monday morning, killing five people, wounding at least 71 and demonstrating their ability to strike at the hub of the U.S.-backed Afghan government.

Gen. Abdul Ghafar Sayed Zada , the head of the criminal investigative division of Kabul's police department, said that security forces had shot five of the attackers, who were armed with AK-47 rifles, rocket launchers and grenades, not far from President Hamid Karzai's palace, the Ministry of Justice and the Central Bank in Afghanistan's capital.

The attackers also struck a shopping mall near the presidential palace, setting the building on fire and causing civilian and security force casualties. Three security personnel were killed as they battled the attackers in or near the six-story Froshgha shopping mall, also known as the Grand Afghan Shopping Center . Two civilians also were killed, and the Health Ministry said that at least 71 people had been wounded in the attacks, including three dozen security officials.

In a scene shown on live television, all the mall's windows were blown out and smoke was pouring forth. Afghan army snipers took up positions on the roof of a nearby building.

Foreign troops die in Afghanistan

Nearly all Canadian forces are due to withdraw from Afghanistan next year [AFP]

Canada and the US have each suffered a troop death in separate incidents in Afghanistan.

John Faught, a 44-year-old Canadian sergeant, was killed in Panjawayi district, southwest of Kandahar city, by a roadside bomb, Daniel Menard, the Canadian commander of allied forces in Kandahar province, said on Saturday.

Faught, who was said to have stepped on the explosive device during a foot patrol, is the first Canadian soldier to have been killed this year and the 139th since 2002.

The US soldier died in fighting in the east of the country, a Nato statement said.

Increasing unrest
Both soldiers were members of Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf), in Afghanistan to help the country's government restore security in response to attacks by groups such as the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

About 2,800 Canadian troops are part of Isaf but are set to leave the country next year, following a decision by Ottawa's decision to remove virtually all its forces.
Isaf forces have stepped up attempts in the last year to weaken anti-government groups in the restive Kandahar province.

There is continuing political turmoil in Afghanistan, with parliament on Saturday rejecting more than half of President Hamid Karzai's nominees for cabinet posts.

Elections last year were also disrupted by claims of corruption.

More than 110,000 international troops are in Afghanistan and will be augmented by another 40,000 soldiers during the coming year.

Foreign forces have been in the country since a US-led invasion in 2001 unseated from power the Taliban government, which was accused of providing a safe haven to al-Qaeda.
