There are increasing signs that conditions in Iraq are falling apart. Suicide bombers are striking on an almost daily basis, and on Wednesday a suicide bomber drove his truck into a Kurdish village killing 19 and wounding 25.

MOSUL, Sept 10 (Reuters) - A suicide bomber drove a truck packed with explosives into a Kurdish village in north Iraq before dawn on Thursday, killing at least 19 villagers and wounding 25, Iraqi police said.

The blast in the village of Wardek, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, seemed calculated to fan ethnic tensions between Kurds and Arabs, whose politicians are embroiled in a bitter dispute over claims to territory and oil.

Women and children were among the dead and many houses were destroyed, police said.
Another truck bomber tried to set off a second blast in the village but local Kurdish Peshmerga forces opened fire and killed him before he reached its outskirts, Iraqi police said.

Wardek is 30 km (18 miles) east of the volatile northern city of Mosul, where al Qaeda and other Sunni Arab insurgent groups are making a last stand after being driven out of their former strongholds in Baghdad and western Iraq.

U.S. officials say insurgents are increasingly seeking ways to attack Kurds in ethnically mixed parts of northern Iraq in a bid to foment ethnic violence between them and Arabs at a time of rising tensions over land disputes.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Roadside bombings in Iraq killed four American troops and seven Iraqis in a flurry of attacks Tuesday corresponding with a Muslim holy month when insurgents regularly step up their fighting.
The attacks, which occurred in Baghdad and several hot spots in northern Iraq, also left 28 people wounded.
The strikes fell during the holy month of Ramadan, considered to be a time of peace and giving for Muslims across the world.
The Americans died when roadside bombings targeted their patrols, the U.S. military said. Three U.S. troops were killed near the Salaheddin provincial city of Baiji in northern Iraq. Another service member was killed in southern Baghdad.
The four were from the Multi-National Corps-Iraq, and their identifications were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The killings marked the deadliest day for U.S. troops since June 30 when they pulled out of urban areas as part of a U.S.-Iraqi security agreement.

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Four U.S. service members were killed in fighting Tuesday in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said.
The deaths took place in Kunar province in what a spokeswoman called an "ongoing event."
Troop deaths have mounted in Afghanistan this year as American and other international forces have stepped up their fight against the Taliban.
August was the deadliest month for the U.S. military in the nearly eight-year-old war, with 52 fatalities. The four deaths on Tuesday bring the number of U.S. troop deaths in Afghanistan to 13 in September.
Elsewhere, a suicide bomber killed two people and wounded six others Tuesday morning in the Kabul airport's military section, Afghan officials said.
U.S. and Belgian nationals were among the wounded, a Western diplomatic official told CNN. The victims were all civilians, the Interior Ministry official said.
The blast occurred near a gate at Kabul International Airport, said Zamari Bashari, a representative of Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior.

Associated Press Writer= BAGHDAD (AP) Suicide attackers struck near a Shiite mosque north of Baghdad and a checkpoint west of the capital on Monday as bombings killed at least 17 people nationwide.

The violence was concentrated in former Sunni insurgent strongholds that have seen a sharp decline in violence after local tribal leaders turned against al-Qaida in Iraq. Despite the relative calm, a series of deadly bombings have raised concerns about a resurgence of violence as the U.S. military scales back its presence, with a full withdrawal planned by the end of 2011.

The attacks which mainly targeted checkpoints and Iraqi policemen €”also highlighted the weaknesses in the Iraqi security forces, which are struggling to prove they are ready to take over from the Americans.

The deadliest attack was a suicide car bomber who struck a line of vehicles waiting to be inspected before crossing a bridge near the Anbar provincial capital of Ramadi, police said.
