D-DAY REMEMBERED: 65 YEARS AGO ALLIES STORMED THE BEACHES OF NORMANDY (WATCH VIDEO)

I was just 15-years old when Allied troops under the command of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower stormed the beaches of Normandy. I can still remember when we heard the news over the radio that our troops had hit the beaches of Normandy. Everyone was invested in the war from the troops in the service to people back home in the States who worked at war plants and grew "Victory Gardens" to support the war effort. Everything was rationed from meat, gasoline to clothing. Every train that passed through our neighborhood carried either troops headed to Europe or the Pacific, or long, long lines of freight trains carrying nothing but war equipment.
Every house had a little flag in the window with a "blue" star for a member of the house that was in the military. As months went by, the "blue" stars were changed to "gold" stars signifying someone from that house had been killed in WW2. It was the best of times and the worst of times, but it was THE GREATEST GENERATION. Today, President Obama, Michele and their two daughters will visit Normandy to commemorate the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. It was the beginning of the end for Hitler's Third Reich.

THREE U.S. SOLDIERS KILLED IN AFGHAN BOMB ATTACK

KABUL (AP) - A bomb and small-arms attack on a vehicle has killed three U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

The military says today's attack took place in a province just north of the capital of Kabul and the site of Bagram, the main U.S. base in Afghanistan.

Another soldier was injured but the nationality was not released.

The area is considered a stronghold of insurgents loyal to an Afghan warlord.It was the third attack in less than a week near the Bagram base.

Taliban militants are behind a wave of attacks that are destabilizing Afghanistan eight years after their regime was ousted by a U.S.-led invasion.

President Barack Obama's administration has ordered 21,000 new U.S. troops to join the fight this year.

SAID JABAR, Iraq — Homemade bombs go off almost every day in Iraq, usually targeting military and police convoys in cities such as Baghdad and Mosul. It's been suspected for years that insurgents harvest at least some of their explosives from the contaminated soil in places such as Said Jabar.

U.S. military officials estimated in 2007 that 15 percent of the charges for improvised explosive devices — the ubiquitous homemade bombs used to attack American forces — came from land mines and other unexploded munitions.

So Officials in the Ministry of Environment and at companies that receive foreign aid to clear mines ask why the military waited until December to ban clearing as a way to halt the trafficking.
