AMERICAN TROOPS, CANADIANS AND AFGHAN SEARCH FOR IEDS

I would love to say I found the IED today, but I'll have to wait until I'm an 80-year-old grandpa. For now I have to tell the truth, the Afghan National Army Soldiers we were with found it. It wasn't much of a surprise, the Canadian Soldiers who are partnered with them told us last night the ANA find nine out of ten of them. It's because they've been doing it for more than six years and they know these roads and the Taliban.

WOMEN IN MILITARY FACE UNREPORTED HARDSHIPS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN

CLICK ON ARROW OR YOU TUBE LOGO TO PLAY

While Americans traditionally take Memorial Day to look back and remember the men who have given to their country, the women who have entered the battlefield often go unnoticed. 150 female US soldiers have been killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and as Amber Stone of Military Families Speaks Out says, even once off the frontline there is a war within that is never truly silenced. Stone speaks to RT about her ordeals on and off the front.

"SWIFTBOATING" TAMMY DUCKWORTH. "DEADBEAT DAD" ILL. REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN JOE WALSH BLASTS IRAQ WAR VET

REPUBLICAN ILLINOIS CONGRESSMAN JOE WALSH, who owes over $160,000 in back child support, blasted military veteran and amputee TAMMY DUCKWORTH by saying serving in the military does not qualify anyone for a political office.

Duckworth is an Iraq War veteran and former U.S. Army helicopter pilot whose severe combat wounds cost her both of her legs and damaged her right arm. She continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard along with her husband, Major Bryan W. Bowlsbey, a signal officer and fellow Iraq War veteran.

Perhaps the "deadbeat dad" should have told that to Dwight "Ike" Eisenhower and Sen.Bob Dole, both Republicans.

SERGEANT WHO SAVED AFGHAN BOYS LIFE LAID TO REST IN PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND

A heroic Sergeant was laid to rest Monday after giving his life for a child.

After lifting a boy out of the way of an oncoming armored vehicle, Sgt. Dennis Weichel was struck by the truck and subsequently died from injuries he sustained, according to the Associated Press. The military originally reported that Weichel had saved an Afghan girl.

A funeral service was held for Weichel on Monday in Providence, R.I. where the flags were flown at half staff, WPRI reports. He will be buried at the State Veterans Cemetery at Exeter.
"I knew Weichel would do something like that because he definitely cares about people," Spec. Seth Chiaro told the news outlet.

Weichel was posthumously promoted to Sergeant and was awarded the bronze star and the NATO Service Medal Afghanistan Campaign Ribbon RI Star, the AP reports.

During the funeral service, according to WPRI, Maj. General Kevin McBride called Weichel's selfless act "a virtue we should all live by."

RACHEL MADDOW'S NEW BOOK, "DRIFT," WINS RAVE REVIEW IN NEW YORK TIMES

RACHEL MADDOW, host of the "Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC, has received a justified rave review for her new book, "DRIFT" in the NEW YORK TIMES,  which details how America has drifted into a war culture run by politicians in Washington and carried out by young Americans in what appears to be a never-ending search to find more and more ways to get around Congress and declare war on some country which is no threat to the security of the United States.

Chronicling the exploits of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment as captured by the Soldiers themselves, the footage shot by these men was only recently declassified by the MoD. It has since been compiled to tell their story via a BBC documentary series titled "Our War".

Known to US soldiers as the Valley of Death, it's been the scene of the some of the most intense fighting in the war in Afghanistan.

After years of intense fighting, the US has left its remote outpost in the Korengal Valley, in the country's east.

Al Jazeera's James Bays has more on the move, which the US calls a re-positioning of forces, but which the Taliban has declared a US defeat.

DEA "The FAST Team" in Afghanistan

CLICK ON ARROW TO PLAY VIDEO

Over a village in southern Afghanistan, an American helicopter circles and lands. Armed men jump out and huddle near a compound wall. A translator speaking through a megaphone announces a police action and says the men are coming in.
It's one of the most politically unstable corners of the world, but the men aren't on a typical mission for troops in Afghanistan. In fact, they aren't even soldiers, and, despite what it looks like, this is not a U.S. military operation. This is the American Drug Enforcement Administration.

"It's never just about seizing and destroying the drugs," team leader Frank Tarentino told "Nightline." "It's really more about the taking down, dismantling, the disruption of organizations. ... This operation will start to generate intelligence and information that will assist for following operations."

For nine years the DEA has quietly toiled away in Afghanistan to stop drug traffickers. But now the agency is at the center of the Obama administration's strategy in Afghanistan.
