MAJOR MILITARY OPERATION UNDER WAY IN AFGHANISTAN

Major military operation under way in Afghanistan

(07-01) 19:51 PDT NAWA, Afghanistan (AP) --

Thousands of U.S. Marines and hundreds of Afghan troops poured into Taliban-infested villages of southern Afghanistan with armor and helicopters Thursday in the first major operation under President Barack Obama's strategy to stabilize the country.

The offensive in the once-forgotten war was launched shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday local time in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold and the world's largest opium poppy producing area. The goal is to clear insurgents from the hotly contested region before the nation's Aug. 20 presidential election.

Officials described the operation, dubbed Khanjar, or "Strike of the Sword," as the largest and fastest-moving of the war's new phase, involving nearly 4,000 of the newly arrived Marines and 650 Afghan forces. British forces last week led similar, but smaller, missions to clear out insurgents in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar provinces.

"Where we go we will stay, and where we stay, we will hold, build and work toward transition of all security responsibilities to Afghan forces," Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson said in a statement.

IRAQIS CELEBRATE U.S. PULLBACK, BUT 33 KILLED BY CAR BOMBING

It ain't over until it's over and it is FAR from over in Iraq. U.S. forces may have pulled back from key Iraqi cities, but all the earmarks are this is an invitation to terrorists and insurgents to launch their attacks on Iraqi citizens.

Iraqis celebrate US pullback but bombing kills 33

HAMZA HENDAWI Associated Press Writer Posted: Tuesday, June 30, 2009 2:35 pm

BAGHDAD - Not a single American soldier was in sight. Gone, too, were the American helicopters whose buzz has for years defined Baghdad's background track.

Left alone to protect the capital Tuesday were thousands of Iraqi troops and police manning checkpoints, with army tanks deployed at potential trouble spots and convoys of pickup trucks with machine guns roaming the streets.

But it was elsewhere, 180 miles (290 kilometers) to the north, that militants delivered their first deadly challenge to Iraq's security forces on a highly symbolic day after the formal withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from cities at midnight.

A car bombing devastated a food market in the city of Kirkuk, killing at least 33 people and wounding 90. The early evening attack, which bore the hallmarks of Sunni extremist groups like al-Qaida in Iraq, was the second in the Kirkuk area since a truck bombing killed 82 people on June 20.

The latest blast was a deadly example of the violence many Iraqis fear will increase with the departure of U.S. troops from urban areas, despite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's confidence in Iraq's nascent security forces.

The bombing came hours after the U.S. military announced that four American soldiers were killed in combat Monday. It was the deadliest attack on U.S. forces since May 21, when three soldiers were killed and nine wounded in a roadside bombing in Baghdad.

FOUR U.S. SOLDIERS KILLED AS IRAQ TRANSITION GETS OFF TO ROCKY START

The much heralded transition from U.S. troops occupying Iraqi cities to Iraqi forces in charge of their own cities and towns got off to a rocky start when four U.S. soldiers were killed in Baghdad on Monday.

There have also been reported incidents of violence in many of the provinces across Iraq and many experts expect matters to get much worse now that U.S. troops have pulled back to garrisons outside of the Iraqi cities and towns.

THIS IS THE WAR IN IRAQ THE MEDIA SAYS IS NOT WORTH COVERING

Whenever we post a video about the wars in either Iraq or Afghanistan, we find people who think we are glamorizing the wars. Nothing could be further from the truth. The videos we post are taken during the heat of battle and they are what our troops face on a daily basis in both Iraq and now Afghanistan. The mainstream media has convinced the American public that 24/7 coverage of Michael Jackson's death is far more important than even one 30-second clip from Iraq or Afghanistan. The reason is easily explained. Very few if any of the people who work in the media---print, TV or radio---have ever served a day of their lives in the military so they have no idea what war is really like. It is much easier for them to repeat endlessly the same boring nonsense about Michael Jackson than it is to report on a war. The truth of the matter is members of the media are like members of Congress. You could count on both hands and probably have several fingers left over how many of them know what it is like to be in the military.
This video is a true portrayal of what war is like and anyone who says this is propaganda should get off their ass and join the military and hopefully they will be assigned to a line company somewhere in the mountains of Afghanistan.

KICK ASS VIDEO: THIS IS WHAT WAR IN AFGHANISTAN LOOKS LIKE

This is what war in Afghanistan looks like. This is the war the mainstream media has collectively decided is not worth covering anymore. There are over 20,000 U.S. troops deployed to Afghanistan and President Obama is planning on sending upwards of 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan. Even as the war escalates in intensity, the mainstream media in the United States continues to turn a blind eye to what is happening in Afghanistan. There has NEVER been a war in the history of the United States which has received less press coverage than the Afghanistan war. Shame on the media.

NEWS ALERT: SITUATION WORSES IN BAGHDAD: MOTORCYLE BOMB KILLS 19

The situation in Baghdad worsened on Friday when a motorcyle bomb went off in a crowded bazaar in Baghadad killing 19 people. There have been numerous attacks in Baghdad in the past week killing over 200 people as the violence escalats in Iraqi capital city.

BAGHDAD (AP) -- A booby-trapped motorcycle exploded in a crowded bazaar Friday in Baghdad, killing at least 19 people, Iraqi officials said, part of an apparent trend toward increased use of motorcycles to thwart stepped up security measures.

SOURCE: DALLAS MORNING NEWS: http://tinyurl.com/npf5u4

The attack was the latest in a week of violence that has killed more than 200 people, with just four days to go before the deadline for U.S. combat troops to withdraw from cities.

The spike has raised fresh doubts about the ability of Iraqi forces to provide security and fight a stubborn insurgency as their American partners become less visible.

U.S. and Iraqi officials have warned they expect more violence in the days surrounding the deadline as militants stage a show of force to try to stoke sectarian bloodshed and undermine confidence in the government.

But American commanders and Iraqi leaders have insisted the withdrawal will go ahead as scheduled. Under a security pact, the Americans must pull back from cities by June 30 and from the entire country by the end of 2011.

The Baghdad explosion occurred just after 9 a.m. when the market was packed with young people buying or selling motorcycles in central Baghdad, according to police and hospital officials.
Ghaith Abdul-Allah, 35, was unloading motorcycles he planned to sell from his truck when the blast occurred.

BREAKING NEWS: BAGHADAD SHATTERED AGAIN BY BOMB BLAST: 13 KILLED, 45 WOUNDED

The situation in Baghdad as well as the rest of Iraq is rapidly going downhill as more and suicide bombs are going off in Baghdad as well as the rest of Iraq. The bombings have put a crimp in the plans of the Obama administration to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq.

Bomb kills 13, wounds 45 in Baghdad

By Abdul Rahman DaherReutersFriday, June 26, 2009 4:50 AM
SOURCE: WASHINGTON POST: http://tinyurl.com/mn2esd

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A bomb killed at least 13 people and wounded 45 when it exploded in an industrial area of Baghdad on Friday, just four days before U.S. combat troops are due to withdraw from Iraqi cities and towns.

Police said the bomb was planted on a motorbike in a market specializing in motorcycles in Bab al-Sheikh, a largely Shi'ite Muslim part of central Baghdad.

Shredded shoes and bits of bloody clothing were scattered around the twisted frames of motorbikes.

A spate of bombings in Baghdad and other parts of Iraq has raised doubts about whether the Iraqi security forces can take over the fight against a stubborn insurgency when U.S. troops withdraw to their bases at the end of this month.

Iraqi police and army have had to be completely rebuilt since U.S. administrators disbanded the Iraqi forces after the U.S. invasion in 2003, a fatal decision that left thousands of trained fighters unemployed and angry, fuelling an insurgency
.
Despite proud assertions from the government that the U.S. pullback represents a victory for Iraq as it regains its sovereignty, many Iraqis lack faith in their own forces.

On Wednesday, 78 people were killed in a bomb attack in Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood, just days after a truck bomb killed 73 people in the northern city of Kirkuk.
