TOP U.S. COMMANDER IN IRAQ SAYS TROOPS MAY STAY LONGER IN MOSUL

WASHINGTON - The top U.S. general in Iraq hedged his bets Friday about whether U.S. combat troops will pull out of the tumultuous city of Mosul on schedule next month, a milestone in the handover of Iraq's security to its own troops.

Mosul is Iraq's third largest city and a stronghold for al-Qaida and other Sunni militant violence despite markedly improved safety in most of the rest of the country. It is a key test of the security contract signed by the United States and Iraq last year that would pull U.S. forces out of the country by 2011.

Gen. Raymond Odierno said U.S. and Iraqi forces are in the midst of a neighborhood-by-neighborhood sweep of Mosul ahead of a June 30 deadline to hand over security for the city to Iraqi forces.

A jury in the US state of Kentucky has found a former private soldier guilty of the rape of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the killing of her and her family.

Steven Green, 24, faces a possible death sentence for his crimes.

Green was discharged from the army because of an apparent personality disorder before his role in the affair came to light.

Four other soldiers are serving sentences of between five and 110 years for their roles in the 2006 attack.

Three had admitted holding down Abeer Qassim al-Janabi, raping her and then killing her, her parents and her younger sister at the family's home in Mahmudiya before torching the building.

Mr Green was discharged from the 101st Airborne Division before the case came to light.
He was the first ex-soldier to be charged under a US law that allows prosecution for crimes committed overseas.

His sentencing hearing will begin on Monday.

In August 2007, Private Jesse Spielman was convicted of conspiracy to rape and murder and sentenced to 110 years in prison for his role in the incident.

Three other soldiers pleaded guilty and received sentences between five and 100 years under plea agreements with prosecutors.

AFGHANISTAN WAR TO COST MORE THAN IRAQ WAR

The price tag for running the war in Afghanistan will outstrip the cost of the conflict in Iraq next year, according to budget documents released today by the Pentagon.

Afghanistan, in the words of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is now supposed to be the Pentagon’s “main effort” and “strategic focus.” This budget makes it official: The Department is requesting a $130 billion “overseas contingency operations” fund, of which the Afghanistan campaign will receive the largest share.

Vice Adm. Steve Stanley, the director of force structure, resources and assessment on the Joint Staff, told reporters that the budget request represents “where you’re going to first see the swing of not only dollars or resources, but combat capability” from Iraq to Afghanistan.

“The money requested here – about $65 billion for Afghanistan –actually exceeds the $61 billion that we’re requesting for Iraq,” he said. “So that’s the first time in our war costs request.”

Those numbers are based on keeping an average of around 100,000 troops in Iraq and 68,000 in Afghanistan. Troop levels are supposed to come down gradually in Iraq over the next year, and these numbers are based on plans to bring troop levels down to around 50,000 by the end of the fiscal year, according to Pentagon Comptroller Robert Hale. In addition to paying for a plus-up of troops, the Afghanistan portion of the operations budget will pay for new equipment, like the scaled-down version of the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected truck that will be customized for the primitive roads of Afghanistan.

Of course, none of these dollar figures are carved in granite. These are just budget promises, based on certain assumptions about how the wars will progress in the year to come. Afghanistan and Iraq have a habit of shredding such predictions. And then, there’s Congress’ habit of packing war spending bills with things that go oink…

The inclusion of the “contingency operations” money in the base Pentagon budget marks a departure with the budgeting practices of the Bush administration, which paid for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan largely through “emergency” supplemental appropriations.

That practice worried lawmakers and budget watchdogs, who argued that the practice limited oversight and encouraged profligate spending. We’ll be taking a closer look at this $664 billion budget, which is supposed to set the template for more disciplined spending within the Department of Defense.

Baghdad: Only in Iraq a few weeks, nearly 500 US Army combat engineers who specialise in clearing roads of explosives have learned they are being shipped off to southern Afghanistan, one of the clearest signs of America's shifting wartime priorities.

The transfer, which moved into its final stages Monday, is the largest movement so far of personnel and equipment from Iraq as President Barack Obama puts the focus on the fight in the Taliban heartland.

It's now clear some of the troops and firepower will flow directly from Iraq, where the Pentagon plans to gradually draw down its more than 132,000 personnel before the withdrawal of all combat forces by September 2010.

Obama has ordered 17,000 more US soldiers and Marines to Afghanistan.

U.S. MILITARY SAYS CONTROVERSIAL AFGHAN BIBLES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED

The U.S. military realized the Chaplain who wanted U.S. Special Forces to hand out bibles in the Pashtun language to the Afghan people was way too controversial and the bibles have been destroyed. The Army Chaplain wanted U.S. Special forces to become "Warriors for Jesus" and had tried to circumvent military regulations and have the troops hand out bibles to the Afghan people.

KABUL (Reuters) - Bibles in Afghan languages sent to a U.S. soldier at a base in Afghanistan were confiscated and destroyed to ensure that troops did not breach regulations which forbid proselytizing, a military spokeswoman said.

The U.S. military has denied its soldiers tried to convert Afghans to Christianity, after Qatar-based Al Jazeera television showed soldiers at a bible class on a base with a stack of bibles translated into the local Pashto and Dari languages.

U.S. Central Command's General Order Number 1 forbids troops on active duty -- including all those based in Iraq and Afghanistan -- from trying to convert people to another religion.
"I can now confirm that the Bibles shown on Al Jazeera's clip were, in fact, collected by the chaplains and later destroyed. They were never distributed," spokeswoman Major Jennifer Willis said at Bagram air base, north of Kabul.

Military officials have said the bibles were sent through private mail to an evangelical Christian soldier by his church back home. The soldier brought them to the bible study class where they were filmed.

Trying to convert Muslims to another faith is a crime in Afghanistan. An Afghan man who converted to Christianity was sentenced to death for apostasy in 2006 but was allowed to leave the country after an international uproar.

"It certainly is, from the United States military's perspective, not our position to ever push any specific kind of religion, period," chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen told a Pentagon briefing Monday.

1: In the bloodiest incident on Monday, 12 civilians -- four women, two children and six men -- were killed by a roadside bomb that struck as they drove in a tractor in the Shamolzai district of southern Zabul province, said Mohammad Wazir, district chief of Shamolzai. "This was a mine newly planted by the Taliban," he told Reuters.

#2: A while later, Taliban guerrillas ambushed a convoy of a security firm in another area of Zabul, killing six Afghan security guards in the convoy and two civilians nearby, Ghulam Jailani, a senior provincial police official, said.

#3: Earlier on Monday, a provincial mayor was among seven people killed by a teenage suicide bomber who blew himself up at the gate of a municipal administration building in the eastern province of Laghman, the Interior Ministry said. Three body guards and three civilians were killed along with the province's mayor, Mohammad Rahim, the Interior Ministry said. A spokesman for the provincial governor's office, Sayed Ahmad Sopai, said 10 people were also wounded, including three women. He said the suicide bomber was identified as a 14-year-old boy from Paktika province further south.

#4: NATO-led troops shot and killed a 12-year-old girl and wounded two other civilians in western Afghanistan after they opened fire at a vehicle close to a convoy, police said on Sunday.

#5: Pakistani forces battled Taliban fighters on Monday as the militants denounced the army and government as U.S. stooges and said a peace pact would end unless the government halted its offensive. In the Buner valley, 100 km (60 miles) northwest of the Pakistani capital, security forces backed by helicopter gunships and artillery attacked militants in three hamlets on Monday, residents and security officials said. "There's been heavy firing going on since morning. It's very scary. Troops are using heavy artillery and gunships," resident Nasir Khan told Reuters by telephone. A military spokesman said seven militants, including a commander, were killed. One soldier was killed and three wounded.

Ahmed Shah Ahmedzai said there must be a "serious investigation" after military chaplains stationed in the US air base at Bagram were filmed discussing how to distribute copies of the Bible printed in the country's main Pashto and Dari languages.

In one recorded sermon, Lieutenant-Colonel Gary Hensley, the chief of the US military chaplains in Afghanistan, tells soldiers that, as followers of Jesus Christ, they all have a responsibility "to be witnesses for him".

"The special forces guys - they hunt men basically. We do the same things as Christians, we hunt people for Jesus. We do, we hunt them down," he says.
