President Bush visited Baghdad on Sunday and received a surprise as an Iraqi journalist tossed his size 10 shoes at Bush during a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Bush ducked the shoes toss and the reporter was hauled away by security guards.

BAGHDAD – His legacy forever linked to an unpopular war, President George W. Bush visited Iraq under intense security Sunday and declared that a long, hard conflict is necessary to protect the United States and give Iraqis hope. "The war is not over," he said.

Bush got a size-10 reminder of the fervent opposition to his policies when a man threw two shoes at him — one after another — during a news conference with Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. "This is the end!" shouted the man, later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt.

Bush ducked both throws. Neither leader was hit. In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt; Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam Hussein with their shoes after U.S. marines toppled it to the ground in 2003.

"All I can report," Bush joked of the incident, "is a size 10."

The U.S. president visited the Iraqi capital just 37 days before he hands the war off to President-elect Barack Obama, who has pledged to end it. The president wanted to highlight a drop in violence in a nation still riven by ethnic strife and to celebrate a recent U.S.-Iraq security agreement, which calls for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011.

"There is still more work to be done," Bush said after his meeting with al-Maliki, adding that the agreement puts Iraq on solid footing. "The war is not over."

In many ways, the unannounced trip was a victory lap without a clear victory. Nearly 150,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq fighting a war that is intensely disliked across the globe. More than 4,209 members of the U.S. military have died in the conflict, which has cost U.S. taxpayers $576 billion since it began five years and nine months ago.

Polls show most Americans believe the U.S. erred in invading Iraq in 2003. Bush ordered the nation into war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq while citing intelligence claiming the Mideast nation harbored weapons of mass destruction. The weapons were never found, the intelligence was discredited, Bush's credibility with U.S. voters plummeted and Saddam was captured and executed.

BAGHDAD - Police say a suicide bomber has struck inside a restaurant near Kirkuk, killing at least 25 people and wounding dozens more.

Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir, commander of the Kirkuk police, also says about 45 people are wounded.

The explosion occurred Thursday at a restaurant about 2 miles north of Kirkuk, the center of Iraq's northern oil fields.

The reason for the attack was unclear but the city has been the scene of long-standing ethnic tension.

The Kurds want to annex Kirkuk and surrounding Tamim province into their self-ruled region in northern Iraq. Most Turkomen and Arabs want the province to remain under central government control, fearing the Kurds would discriminate against them.

BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. troops launched raids in at least four Iraqi cities, detaining six people believed associated with al-Qaida in Iraq, the U.S. military said Thursday.

A U.S. statement says two men were detained Wednesday in a pair of raids near Tarmiyah, 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Baghdad.

Two others were captured Thursday in Ramadi, capital of Anbar province west of Baghdad, the statement said. The two others were arrested Thursday — one in Mosul and the other in Baghdad, the U.S. said.

U.S. troops have broad authority under a U.N. mandate to apprehend people deemed a security threat and hold them indefinitely without charge.

However, the mandate expires at the end of this month and will be replaced by a U.S.-Iraqi security agreement that requires the U.S. to obtain warrants to search houses or detain people except in active combat.

The new regulations will be part of a series of major changes in the five-year U.S.-led mission.
Britain announced Wednesday it will withdraw all but a handful of its 4,000 soldiers from Iraq next year. The U.S. is expected to shift a brigade to Basra in southern Iraq, where most of the British forces are located, to ensure the security of supply lines into the country from Kuwait.

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has called for withdrawing all U.S. combat troops from Iraq by early 2010, shifting responsibility to the Iraqis for the defense of the country against Sunni and Shiite extremists.

The Associated Press As of Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, said at least 4,207 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes eight military civilians killed in action. At least 3,395 military personnel died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers. The AP count is two fewer than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Tuesday at 10 a.m. EST.

Iraqi officials say two suicide car bombers targeted two police stations in the former insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, killing at least 10 people and wounding many more.

A senior police officer in Fallujah said one of the stations had been destroyed in the blast.

He said the explosives were on trucks that were detonated near the concrete barriers surrounding the police stations.
